Love Was In The Air

The Democratic National Convention opened in Chicago yesterday and the theme was For the People.  The theme song should have been Shower the People with Love.  It was truly the most remarkable convention in my lifetime. There were plenty of hard-hitting statements and hilarious one-liners about the opposition but that’s not difficult when the opposition espouses conspiracy theories, division, hate, and lies. Speaker after speaker at the DNC spoke of lifting every single person up, expanding our freedoms, combatting climate change, promoting equality, and building the economy from the bottom up, not the top down.

Minnesotans can be especially proud of having our own Governor Tim Walz at the top of the ticket who was seen shedding a few tears and holding back more.  The night ended with President Biden who was lovingly introduced by his daughter Ashley. The crowd roared We Love Joe for a full 4 minutes and continued to interrupt him with cheers of love and support.  The President then gave a long, rousing speech that laid out the vast number of accomplishments of his term and the lack of accomplishments under the prior administration.  He stated that his greatest accomplishment was choosing Kamala Harris as his running mate and he vowed to dedicate himself to electing her and Tim Walz.

But what stood out the most was the simplest, most universal idea that binds all humanity: Love.  Love of country, family, freedom, and each other prompted cheers and tears for the speakers, the audience in Chicago and those of us watching from home.  Now it’s up to all of us to spread this enthusiasm and love as we work to elect Harris, Walz, and all the DFL candidates up and down the ballot!
